   New Year Peaks
“The waters continued to recede until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were visible” Genesis 8:5 (HCSB).
This verse has a unique applicability to the first day of a new year. The “tenth month” here corresponds with our January; so the “first day” is our January first. What an exhilarating discovery were those uncovered mountain-tops that first day! The flood was declining. God had not “forgotten to be gracious”. After a very difficult and trying 2009 those mountain-tops speak to us at the beginning of this new year. What will this new year bring, of joy or sorrow, achievement or frustration, health or sickness, good or bad, prosperity or calamity? We cannot know what troubles or surprises will unfold in the months ahead, yet those who truly trust in Christ are not left in total obscurity. Out of the storm and rain of last year grand securities stand out in advance view.
There are those reassuring mountain-tops of the divine promises; “by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises” 2 Peter 1:4 (NKJV), pledging to us the divine presence, protection, and provision throughout the coming days.
There are the mountain-tops of spiritual possibilities. To all who have received Him our Lord gives, “the right to become children of God” John 1:12 (NKJV). Our Lord said to Peter, "You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas" John 1:42 (NKJV). It is time to stop looking back at what might have been, and say afresh, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength” Philippians 4:13 (NIV).
There are the mountain-tops of our Christian privileges – of fellowship “with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ” 1 John 1:3 (NIV). There is that knowing that through the Holy Spirit we are never far away from our Heavenly Father.
There are the mountain-tops of challenging opportunities. Already they have begun to shine through the disappointments of life. Forget the failures of the past; expect to learn from them to trust Christ more and self less. Remember you can be one who sees a difficulty in every opportunity or on the other hand you can be one who sees an opportunity in every difficulty. Prayerfully resolve to be about doing that which is good in this new year.
Then there is that glory-capped peak, the hope of our Lord’s return. The darker the times, the more resplendently it shines; the harder the battle the more glorious the victory.
With total trust in Christ the Ark, you can gaze out on the mountain-top of hope with assurance this year.

The Mandate for Believers in Christ
Matthew 28:19,20 says:
“All power in heaven and earth is given to you. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely, I will be with you always, even to the end of the age!’’

All believers in Christ are under orders to evangelize until Christ returns. In the original language “all nations” mean every people. Jesus said: “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Mat. 24:14). Today, it is estimated that there are over 6 billions people and 17,000 different people groups in the world. People groups are tribes, language groups, and interest groups. Our mandate is to make disciples or followers of the Lord Jesus Christ of all nations. We are not to convert people to Christ. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sins and lead them to repentance. In Matt. 9:36-8, Jesus gave us a mandate to pray as he looked to the multitudes as sheep without a shepherd and said, ``The harvest is plenteous, but the workers are few. Pray therefore, to the Lord of the harvest, that He would send forth workers into His fields!’’

In John 15:16 Jesus said: ``You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you that you and ordained you that you should go and bring forth fruit . . . that whatever you asked in my name it will be given to you.’’ The power of the Holy Spirit will give you boldness, confidence, and courage to witness for Christ and share your faith with others. It is God who convicts, leads, directs, and calls us into His field. We participate by going, giving and praying (Rom. 10.14ff, Phil 4:19, Acts 12:12). Are you obeying this mandate?
